Privacy Policy
Alere is a food, weight and workout tracker with a coach that explains your progress. It is operated by Aleksandr Antonov, an individual based in Colorado, USA ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the Alere app and its servers collect, what we do with it, and the choices you have. Questions: support@alere.app.
What we collect
Account information
- Your email address, name, and a password. The password is stored only as a one-way hash (bcrypt) and is never visible to us.
- Whether your email address is verified, and the sign-in sessions on your devices.
Profile and goals
- Sex, date of birth, height, starting and goal weight, activity level, training experience and schedule, diet preferences, preferred units, and time zone. These are used to calculate your daily calorie, protein and carbohydrate targets and to plan workouts.
What you log
- Weigh-ins, meals and food entries (including foods and meals you save), and your daily targets.
- Workouts: exercises, sets, weights, notes, how you felt (for example soreness or pain you report), and any photo you attach to an exercise.
- Walks, runs, hikes and rides recorded in the app: duration, distance, step count, the route (see Location below), and estimated calories.
- Messages you send to the coach, and the coach's replies and notes about your day.
Location
Only while you are recording a walk, run, hike or ride that you started. The app records your route so it can show the map, distance and elevation. On iPhone it keeps recording while the screen is locked; on Android it uses a visible ongoing notification while recording. When you mark a session as indoor, the app stores at most one location for it (to tell, for example, which gym it was) and never a route. The app does not collect location at any other time.
Motion and steps
While you record a session, the app counts your steps using your phone's motion sensors.
Apple Health and Health Connect
Only if you connect them in Settings. Alere reads walking, running, hiking and cycling workouts — their times, distance, active calories, steps, heart-rate readings over the workout, and the route — so a workout recorded on a watch or another app still counts. Alere never writes anything to Apple Health or Health Connect. Data read from them is used only to show and coach on your own activity inside Alere: it is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with anyone except the service providers below, who process it on our behalf. It is not stored in iCloud. Alere's use of information received from Health Connect adheres to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Camera and photos
- The camera is used to scan food barcodes and to photograph a meal so the app can estimate it.
- Photos you choose from your library are used the same way, or attached to a workout or a problem report.
- Meal photos are not kept. A meal photo is sent to our AI provider to recognise the food, and we do not store the photo after the estimate is returned. What you save is the food entries you review and accept.
- Adding a product the app does not know. If you scan a barcode Alere cannot find, you can photograph the package front and its nutrition label. The photos are sent to our AI provider to read the label and are not stored. The product you then confirm — its name, brand, barcode and nutrition values — is added to Alere's shared food catalog, where every Alere user can find it. Other users do not see who added it; we keep an internal record of the adding account, and the product stays in the catalog if you later delete your account.
Problem reports
If you send a report from the app, it includes what you write, a screenshot of the screen you were on, any photos you attach, the screen's name, your device model, platform and version, the screen size and the size of its status and home-indicator areas, the app version, and a short list of recent errors the app encountered talking to our servers.
Notifications
The rest timer can show a notification on your device. It is scheduled on the phone itself; Alere does not use push notifications and has no push token for your device.
Early-access sign-ups
If you leave your email address on our website (www.alere.app) to hear when Alere is available, we keep that address, the kind of device you signed up from (Android phone, iPhone or a type of computer, read from your browser so we only invite you to a test your phone can run), which form you used, and when. It is not an account and is not linked to one. We use it only to tell you when the app is available, and we do not add it to any other list. To keep bots off the list, the form uses Google reCAPTCHA (see Service providers); Google's script loads only once you start using the form. The form is protected by reCAPTCHA, and Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
Technical information
Our servers keep operational logs of requests (such as which part of the service was called, the result, and how long it took), linked to your account ID, so we can keep the service running and investigate problems.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent your personal information, or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- We do not show ads, and the app contains no advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs.
- We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We do not use your health data to make decisions about you outside the app, such as insurance or credit.
How we use your information
- To provide the app: store your logs, calculate targets, show trends, plan workouts, and generate coach messages and day reports.
- To send account emails: verification codes, password resets, and — only if you turn it on — a daily summary email.
- To keep the service secure and working, and to fix problems you report.
Service providers
We use these companies to run Alere. They process data on our behalf, for these purposes only.
| Provider | What for | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services (USA) | Hosting, database, file storage | All data stored by Alere, encrypted at rest |
| Anthropic (USA) | The AI coach, workout planning, meal-photo recognition, and reading food labels | The coach messages you send, a summary of your profile, targets and recent logs needed to answer, and meal or label photos you submit. Sent through Anthropic's commercial API. |
| Resend (USA) | Email delivery | Your email address and the content of the email |
| USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts | Food nutrition data | Food search terms and barcodes only, sent from our servers — never your identity |
| Google reCAPTCHA (USA) | Keeping bots off the early-access list on our website | Information about your browser and device and how you interact with the page, collected by Google when you use the early-access form, under Google's Privacy Policy. Not used in the app. |
| Apple Maps (iPhone), Google Maps (Android) | Drawing route maps | Map requests from your device for the area being shown |
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the safety of a person, or as part of a transfer of the service, in which case this policy continues to apply to your data.
How long we keep it
- Your account and logs: until you delete your account.
- When you delete your account: your account, profile, logs, workouts, routes, coach messages and stored photos are deleted immediately. Encrypted database backups that may still contain them expire within 7 days.
- Problem reports: when you delete your account, any report you sent is kept only in anonymised form — your identity, screenshots, photos and identifiers are removed, and what remains is your written description, the generic screen name, and error summaries. Resolved reports are deleted 6 months after they are resolved. Screenshots are deleted after at most 365 days in any case.
- Early-access email addresses: at most one year after you leave them, then deleted automatically.
- Server logs: up to 90 days.
- Sign-in sessions: expire after 30 days without use.
- Products you add to the shared food catalog: kept, as part of the catalog other users rely on.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction: everything you log can be viewed and edited in the app.
- Deletion: Settings → Account → Delete Account removes your account and data as described above. You can also email support@alere.app. See Delete your account.
- Early-access list: email support@alere.app and we will remove your address.
- A copy of your data: email support@alere.app from your account's address and we will send it.
- Health connections: disconnect Apple Health or Health Connect in Settings, and revoke access in the Health app or Health Connect at any time.
- Device permissions: location, motion, camera and photos can be turned off in your phone's settings; the related feature then stops working, and the rest of the app does not.
Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, or the EU/UK), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or obtain a copy of your personal data, and to object to or restrict its use. We honour these requests for every user, wherever they live. Email support@alere.app; we respond within 30 days. You will not be treated differently for exercising them.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS), the database and file storage are encrypted at rest, your password is stored only as a hash, and sign-in tokens are kept in your phone's secure storage. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your data we will tell you as required by law.
Where data is processed
Alere is operated from the United States and stores data in the United States (AWS us-east-1). If you use it from elsewhere, your data is transferred to and processed in the United States.
Adults only
Alere is for people 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact support@alere.app and we will delete it.
Not medical advice
Alere is a tracking and coaching tool, not a medical service. See the Terms of Use.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above. If a change materially affects how your data is used, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
